Course aims

On this course learners explore a range of fine art media, techniques and processes through traditional and modern approaches. They develop ideas for painting, prints and sculptures in response to contemporary and historical examples.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade B in art/graphics or BTEC Level Two Diploma in art and design. A portfolio will be requested for interview.

Applicants may be accepted without a formal art qualification if they have a strong collection of work at interview.

Course content

Year One

A skill-building year where students will have the opportunity to explore new materials and progress through various short projects. These skills will provide students a strong basis to build on in the second year. There is no formal exam in the first year, but ongoing assessment throughout.

Year Two

Component 1 - Personal Investigation

In this unit there is a written component in which candidates develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished piece or pieces. Learners pick a theme or idea and produce a range of work based on this, showing their critical thinking skills and ability to research in depth. Accompanying text supports the practical work and explains the student’s thought process which must be no less than 1000 and no more than 3000 words.

Component 2 - Externally-Set Assignment

Students are provided with eight topics/questions from which they choose one to study. The summative exam is 15 hours long and students are expected to create a clearly-defined section of work that makes up a whole, leading to a finished piece or pieces.

This course gives you the opportunity to broaden your skills in this area, experience new artists/designers and visit new galleries.

Course assessment

Dudley Sixth staff grade these units before the marks are externally-verified.
