On this course learners explore a range of fine art media, techniques and processes through traditional and modern approaches. They develop ideas for painting, prints and sculptures in response to contemporary and historical examples.
GCSE grade B in art/graphics or BTEC Level Two Diploma in art and design. A portfolio will be requested for interview.
Applicants may be accepted without a formal art qualification if they have a strong collection of work at interview.
A skill-building year where students will have the opportunity to explore new materials and progress through various short projects. These skills will provide students a strong basis to build on in the second year. There is no formal exam in the first year, but ongoing assessment throughout.
In this unit there is a written component in which candidates develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished piece or pieces. Learners pick a theme or idea and produce a range of work based on this, showing their critical thinking skills and ability to research in depth. Accompanying text supports the practical work and explains the student’s thought process which must be no less than 1000 and no more than 3000 words.
Students are provided with eight topics/questions from which they choose one to study. The summative exam is 15 hours long and students are expected to create a clearly-defined section of work that makes up a whole, leading to a finished piece or pieces.
This course gives you the opportunity to broaden your skills in this area, experience new artists/designers and visit new galleries.

Most paper, paint and other media and materials are provided by Dudley Sixth but students should have a basic kit that can be bought from our technicians and tutors at VAT-free prices.
