Drama and Theatre Studies

Course aims

This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of 21st century theatre practice. You will explore a range of texts and practically apply the theoretical approaches of a number of influential theatre practitioners. You will gain an understanding of how theatre is made through the analysis of live performance and work collaboratively to devise your own original piece whilst becoming adept at interpreting and realising the written word from page to stage.

Entry requirements

You will require a grade C in drama/theatre studies with a grade 6 in English or a grade B in a humanities subject. An acting audition will also be required in addition to the general entry requirements.

Course content

Exploration of Drama and Theatre

  • Group performance of one key extract from a performance text and informed by the methodology of one influential practitioner
  • A monologue or duologue performance from one key extract from a different performance text
  • A portfolio submission (2000-2500 words).

Theatre Makers in Practice

  • Practical exploration and study of a complete performance text(s) – focusing on how you might interpret and realise the extract(s) in performance
  • Analysis and evaluation of a live theatre performance. Devising
  • Creation of an original devised performance piece using one key extract from a performance text and a theatre practitioner as a stimuli.

Text in Performance

  • Group performance of one key extract from a performance text
  • A monologue or duologue performance from one key extract from a different performance text.

Course assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, written examinations and practical examinations.

Materials

Loose movement clothes are recommended for practical sessions. Reading lists and play texts will be provided by your tutor.

Progress

Higher Education to study drama or a performing arts related subject.
